Your question is difficult to answer in short.
Warrior Rit:
Pros:
High Armor Level
Strength Attribute gives Armor Penetration which means higher damage.
Stances and Shouts which give offensive and Defensive Buffs.
Cons:
Attribute Level for Ritualist Atts capped at 12.
No Spawning Power, which means no Boon of Creation

There are some effective builds out there for W/Rts, but they mostly revolve around The Elite Vengeful was Khanei
Ritualist Warrior:
Pros:
Spawning Power available.
Runes available which can raise your Atts above 12.
Cool animations.
Cons:
Biggest con is you're soft. This can be buffed to some extent though.
Damage output is low with Melee weapons but can be improved some with the skill Strength of Spirits.
All that aside, my OPINION is that you will find that a Warrior is better than a Ritualist at using melee weapons. However, a Ritualist makes a great offensive weapon with Spirits (SoS) , a great Healer and good Protection toon without using Enchantments, and can be something of an effective Nuker with skills like Destructive was Glaive, Channeled Strike, etc...
Warriors aren't even the best Tanks anymore, not compared to A/Es and E/As. I think that this is part of the reason that GW2 only has the 4 basic classes. But that is food for another string.
Of course, I might be entirely deluded.
One last thing. You might want to look at this site, but be warned, you can lose days there and more trying out stuff you see there.

The fact is while you can have spirits and melee weapons as a rit, your overall effectiveness decreases. As with any class you need to be dedicated in what you want to do. If you have nightfall a Rit elite skill called Spirit's Strength (of Strength of Spirit can't remember) gives you extra damage to your attacks. If you want a rit with a sword, axe, or hammer (I strongly discourage hammer for a rit) then that is the path you need to take.
Or if you prefer spirits go with one of the many Spirit spamming builds avaiable now. If you are going for the melee option you will still have some spirits at your disposal since you should be using either communing or (preferably) channeling attributes for the weapon spells that will also boost your attack strengths.
An important thing to remember is don't get discouraged and play what you are comfortable with. Also make sure that if you are playing with other humans they need to be relaxed and know what it is you are doing. There are lots of people out there that only want cookie cutter builds, so unless you have people that play the game for fun (as it is intended) you may find it hard to find a group to play with.
Another note is that the Warrior build mentioned by Grenth above me is more suited for Farming than actually general gameplay. A warriors very shallow energy pool and extreme lack of energy managment make having a war/rit much less effective than a rit/war.

Rt/R or Rt/P with a spear is much better than Rt/W. (spirit's Strength for spear, splinter weapon with 14-15 channeling magic and zealous bow for barrage)
You can use your spirits to "tank" if you use a ranged weapon. In Guild Wars there's no such thing as a tank though.

You can get an elite skill by buying a Signet of Capture from a skill trader (not all skill traders will have it) and then you will equip it on your bar. You must kill a boss of your primary or secondary profession to capture that bosses elite skill. You will just click signet of capture after the boss is killed and that will give you the elite skill on your character and your account for PvP.

The Elite tomes only give you the elite if one of your characters has already unlocked it.
What that means is you have a ritualist he captures signet of spirits, later on another character of yours wants the same skill but is nowhere near that boss in the game, an elite tome will give him that skill.
So a tome is unlikely to help you unless you already got that skill last time you played.

I wouldn't recommend it. Death Nova is much better used by AI. Trying to find and click on your minions and manage them is hard in the middle of a fight.
